This week: We’re about to have another kid. And more!

Carly’s due date is approaching.
We’re ready.
Maybe not.
Knox came two weeks early.
When will the new kid show up?
We’re anticipating life with a newborn. Again.
Anticipation involves a certain amount of anxiety.
We’re living in a Shepard Tone.
It’s a sound illusion of a tone that seems to continually ascend or descend in pitch but actually remains the same.
Constant anticipation. Somewhat constant anxiety. In Dunkirk it’s suspenseful, but it can also be fun.
The National Gallery of Art made a wonderful video about
’s DrawTogether Strangers project where people create blind contour drawings of each other (like Carly and I did last week).I love the moment they see their own drawing. We’re anticipating their reaction. How will they feel about what they’ve made? What will the other person think? Spoiler: there’s lots of laughter.
One of the participants says, “It’s a little bit scary, because you want to control it.”
Exactly.
The road ahead of us is unknown, but it’s also familiar.
We’ve had a newborn before. We’ve been exhausted. We’ve changed diapers.
However, this is a totally different human who will be different than Knox. She’s already different. Plus, Carly and I are different. Knox was born almost four years ago and a lot of things have changed since then.
In some ways having a newborn again will be the same. In other ways it will be completely different.
It’s like Will Ferrell… I mean Chad Smith playing along with a song he’s never heard before.
Drumming is familiar, but the song is unknown.
He uses what he knows to embrace and explore the unknown.
But isn’t that just life?
The anticipation makes it feel like it’s taking forever.
We’re just so excited to hold her.
If Periodical Cicadas can wait 17 years to emerge from the ground I think we can deal with a couple more days of anxious anticipation.
“Prolly let’s go for a walk because you need a lot of steps to get that baby out.”

I just had my third. Best wishes to your family. You are right, the same but also very different!
Chock full of wonderful and inspiring thoughts and resources. I’ve made myself anxious thinking about finding the time to read all this. Thank you for sharing and the best of luck and healthy arrival to the newest member of the band.
