I’ve got about 1000 cds collected over 30ish years. A couple of years ago I resorted them by spine colour, blacks and blue and red etc.. looks great but I can never find what I’m looking for but I will end up with what I need…curating a road trip is just a matter of picking a colour…
I loved reading your thoughts about buying CDs, especially the ownership details. I've certainly noticed that we are now dealing with commercials for every streaming channel and have really felt the desire to return to DVDs. I've also decided to try out an actual/physical newspaper subscription service to gather news. I'm a few weeks into just having the NYT Sunday edition delivered (it's enough information to last a week, if not more). I have already really started to enjoy it and feel much more intentional while reading.
I have my CD hoard somewhere. We have a bunch of DVDs as well. I’ve seen enough people regret parting with them I’m glad they weren’t donated when I read Marie Kondo’s book. I even have a few VHS, but that is more for the nostalgia of the form factor and the packaging design.
I would have loved to make some VHS packaging. I recently got a cassette that was clear but had screenprinting on the actual cassette which I thought was cool.
I had a bunch of CDs but turned them into MP3 and got rid of the discs. I still buy DVDs from ThriftBooks online. You can get a whole series (used) for the price of one used movie. It's better bang for your buck.
I did get a Bluetooth device for my car (1999) to connect my phone to the radio system. It broadcasts my phone's audio onto an unused FM frequency, then I turn to that "station" to pick it up. So I play my MP3s on a playlist in my car that way. I also bought a vinyl record player this summer and recorded my mother's records (the songs I wanted) into mp3 format. I gave my brother most of the records back. But I have a few here.
So I appreciate the new technology, but I do not like the streaming services. They don't do that well giving me mixes. I need MY mp3s and not random stuff suggested to me all the time.
Reading this made me feel like I've been living a decade behind. I hadn't realised people had replaced their CDs and DVDs. I *have* taken all of them out of their cases and put them into large "wallets" so that they leave more space on my bookshelves for books. I hope you're going to tell me people are reading books digitally now too.
One of the things that got me into art when I was young was album art on LPs. They were always so well thought out.
Yes CDs!!! Finally moved into a new apartment a few months ago and got all my CDs out of storage and onto shelves again, after being boxed up for about 10 years. It's been wonderful rediscovering what I have, and disappointing remembering how much I parted with. Buying CDs, vinyl, and other merch directly from musicians is the best way to support the artists you love, too ☺️
I'm looking into Carrd. Next I need to get a home stereo system. My dad used to have a big one back in the day. Now we just have this dinky little bluetooth thing.

Woah that's a lot! I like the color coding, you just have to have more of a visual memory to know where stuff is located.

I've also thought about a physical newspaper subscription but now I'll have to seriously look into it. Thanks Matt!
An album (CD,vinyl,tape,etc...) is an expression of the artist. Random individually purchased songs are an expression of the listener.
Woah. Well said!

I have been hearing that cds are somewhat worth some money now, depending on what you have. Anyone know of any truth to this?
R.E.M. Monster is an incredible cd! There is a surround sound DVD version that I highly recommend!
Maybe? I'm not sure. All the ones I've bought so far have been $2 or under. I'll look into the DVD version of Monster.

I like the idea of combining old and new technology to get a setup that works for you.
Thanks for the shoutout!

Haha everything comes back around.
Just to be clear, I am 35.

I love opening old boxes of stuff! Yes, buying directly from the artist is the best way to support.
Heck yes websites. I use Carrd and Wordpress a bunch.
And also: CDS! I got back to buying some heavy metal albums from years ago for my little home stereo.

Oh yeah, I remember the big units! The glass cabinets. GLASS!!!? The big speakers. We were LIVING.
Seriously. Bring back stereos as furniture.
Those like, CHESTS that held a record player? All wooden and shit? People had them in their dining rooms.
